Ever struggled to figure out how a Microsoft 365 license was assigned? Directly or through a group? That struggle is over! The Microsoft 365 admin center is introducing a clearer view to distinguish between direct and group-based license assignments.

Since Microsoft deprecated license management from the Entra and Azure portals in September 2024, the Microsoft 365 admin center has remained the go-to place. But there was still no option to see whether a license was assigned directly to a user or through a group. This made troubleshooting and audits slower and more complex.

Microsoft 365 Admin Center’s Updated License Assignment View

The new view shows the source of a Microsoft 365 user’s license assignment with faster page loads.

Where to see it: Go to Microsoft 365 admin center → Billing → Licenses, select the subscription, and you’ll notice a new layout.

👤 User tab → Shows users with direct license assignments.
👥 Groups tab → Shows licenses assigned via group-based licensing.

From the Groups tab, select a group name. The Successfully assigned tab lists all users assigned the license without error, and the Action needed tab lists all group-based license assignment errors.

Action needed license assignments

While this may not restore the unified license assignment path view from the previous Entra portal, it provides visibility into direct and group-based assignments separately.

If you haven’t received the update yet, hang tight. Microsoft says the rollout will be complete by the end of September 2025.
